On 8th March 2021, we joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Women’s Day which had as its theme this year, “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, which celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain in women’s representation in politics and governance. This was encapsulated in the hashtag, #ChooseToChallenge.

At Yiaga Africa, we commemorated the day by restating our commitment to to supporting and enabling our communities to continue to #ChooseToChallenge through supporting gender-sensitive legislation and reforms,  supporting constitutional and electoral reforms to promote the inclusion of women, documenting the stories of women who ran for office and supporting young women to run for office through the Ready To Run platform of the Not Too Young To Run movement.

As part of celebrating Women’s History Month, Yiaga Africa and the Ready to Run movement hosted a webinar on how to improve women’s political participation ahead of the 2021 elections. The webinar which was moderated by Ms. Amina Yahaya, an international development practitioner had Goyit Jiritmwa Morgak, a member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Fatima Hassan-Adeleke, a member of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) share their perspectives on how political parties and the government can create policies and and laws for the deliberate inclusion of more women in government.
