The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was lit up in the Israeli flag in solidarity overnight following the devastating Hamas attack on Saturday.

“In solidarity with Israel,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, alongside a photo of the landmark.

In the US, New York Governor Kathy Hochul directed landmarks to be illuminated blue and white.

“New York stands with Israel – today and every day,” Hochul said.

“New York is proud to be home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel, and as Governor I am committed to doing everything in my power to ensure this community is supported, uplifted and protected.”

Landmarks illuminated included the Empire State building, Niagara Falls and the One World Trade Center.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry thanked the world for the “support and solidarity” on X.

“This is a dark day for all of us here in Israel, but we can feel your love and warmth from miles away.”

The Palestinian extremist organization Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip on Saturday, with hundreds said to have been killed on both sides in the ensuing fighting, which also saw Israelis being taken hostage into Gaza.
