LERSA residents appeals to protesters to obey court order, urges them to ‘stay away’ from Lekki Peninsula

In line with the recent, order given by Lagos High Court, stated that the proposed August 1 nationwide protest, in Lagos to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and the Peace Park in Ketu. The Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA) has Advisory on Peaceful Protest demonstrations at designated.

Writes Dear Esteemed Members on their position:

A. In recent weeks, there have been calls for protests across Nigeria, including on the Lekki Peninsula. The laws of the land support peaceful protests.

B. The Nigerian President, Governors and other Civil Authorities have affirmed this right. While it is a right of citizen to communicate their displeasure to the authorities, it is also an important feedback mechanism to the government.

C. At its July 2024 General Meeting which held on Saturday 27th July 2024, the LERSA General Assembly unanimously agreed to support peaceful protests at designated locations, as may be agreed with security agencies and civil authorities.

D. We have received legal guidance that a Lagos State High Court presided by Justice Emmanuel Ogundare sitting on Tuesday 30th July 2024, has granted an ex-parte order restricting all protests within Lagos State to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, and Peace Park, Ketu.

E. While we support the rights of citizens to peacefully express grievances through protests, it has to be reiterated that such expressions should be through peaceful means.

The Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association hereby advise the leadership of our member-estates, communities, organizations to please encourage their residents and stakeholders to please remain law-abiding.

All our members and their wards that are desirous of joining the peaceful protests are encouraged to utilize the two designated locations.

Your cooperation is crucial to ensuring this process is successful. Our peninsula represents the future of Lagos, and we must protect it vigorously and uphold its positive image.
