Burundi President - Pierre Nkurunziza Dies At Age Of 55 ~ The Press Tv

The East Africa President was said to have died of heart failure on Tuesday according to the statement posted on the official Twitter handle of Burundi Government.
The statement read, “The Government of the Republic of Burundi announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi following heart failure on June 8, 2020,”.
The President Nkurunziza who died at the age of 55 became Burundi president in 2005. He ruled for 15 years.
His 15 years reign witnessed economic stagnation as reported that more than 70% of the Burundi population live below $1 in a day.
Before his death, he had earlier agreed to step down from power for Évariste Ndayishimiye.
The law of Burundi stipulated that the president of the legislature should take over the control of the government untill the inauguration of new president in August 20.
Burundi government said it would observe 7 days mourning as a farewell to the death of the president starting on Tuesday.
