Former Nigeria internationals Nwankwo Kanu and Mutiu Adepoju have saluted the Super Eagles, following their hardfought 1-0 win against Benin Republic in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers in Porto Novo on Saturday.
The Eagles went into the Group L matchday five encounter having already qualified for next year’s AFCON, after Sierra Leone were held to a goalless draw by Lesotho.
Paul Onuachu was the hero as he netted an injury-time goal off a corner, to end Benin’s eight-year run without defeat at home.
The win took the Eagles to 11 points while the clash between Benin Republic (seven points) and Sierra Leone (four points) on the final day of the qualifiers, will decide who joins Nigeria at next year’s AFCON.
And reacting to the win, Kanu wrote on his verified Twitter handle:”Congratulations, Congratulations my country people massive win. Up super eagles we move.”
And according to Adepoju, a 1994 AFCON winner:”Congrats, Super Eagles.”
The Eagles will round off the qualifiers at home to Lesotho who have already been eliminated.
