Prince Adebayo's Democracy Day Speech: Fragility of Democracy and Importance of Good Citizenship

His Excellency Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate for the 2023 election, delivered a heartfelt Democracy Day speech on June 12, commemorating 30 years since the monumental success of the Hope ’93 election. His speech highlighted the fragility of democracy, the importance of good citizenship, and the need for progress in every election.

Prince Adebayo acknowledged the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy, including the late Chief MKO Abiola, Solomon Lar and Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the NRLC. He also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who played a key role as a senator of the SDP in 1993, for his contributions to the fight for democracy.

In his speech, Prince Adebayo stressed the need for citizens to be enlightened and motivated by progress and community development, rather than voting based on religious and tribal sentiments or selling their votes. He also emphasized the importance of creating political parties as ideological convergences of citizens who prioritize the betterment of their country, rather than personal gain.

Furthermore, Prince Adebayo reminded the government that public service is a trust and a delegation, and emphasized the importance of humility and servant leadership. He urged the media to educate the public on the importance of democracy as the fairest and surest way for the minority to have their say and for the majority to have their way.

As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, Prince Adebayo wished all citizens a happy day and reminded everyone that the direction the country should travel in is one of unity, faith, peace, and progress.
