German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived for his first official visit to Luxembourg on Monday with his wife and was welcomed by Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

Greeted with military honours Steinmeier briefly talked to onlookers including children and thanked them for coming.

He will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of the victims of World War II and afterwards hold talks with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.

Steinmeier also plans to meet firefighters and rescue workers who helped the Germans during the flood disaster in the western Ahr valley in July 2021.

Luxembourg has more than 660,000 inhabitants and is the second smallest country in the EU after Malta.

Steinmeier had been to Luxembourg many times in his previous post as foreign minister (2013 to 2017).
