Lagos Police Command Impounds 50 Vehicles in Enforcement of Number Plates

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani has hinted that about 50 vehicles were impounded across Lagos yesterday Monday 15th June, 2026 for infractions as the Lagos Command commenced statewide enforcement against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or no registration number plates. The action was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security, and denying criminal elements the opportunity to conceal their identities and activities, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise yesterday, CP Tijani said: “Some are still coming in because others are at the divisional level or area commands,” he added, warning that impounded vehicles may be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to motorists who ignored earlier warnings.

He stressed the security risks of obscured plates, noting such vehicles can be used by criminals and evade detection by road cameras. “If criminals use vehicles with covered plates for crime, even our cameras cannot capture anything. If the vehicle is stolen, tracking becomes nearly impossible,” he explained.

“This is a note of warning to all motorists who think this is a joke. We are serious, and this will be a continuous exercise,” CP Tijani stated.

He urged motorists, transport operators, fleet owners, and members of the public to ensure that their vehicles carry valid, duly issued, and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners are also encouraged to ensure that all relevant vehicle documents are up-to-date and readily available for inspection when required.

The CP was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers during the operation.
