Security agencies have rescued 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian who were abducted in Imo State, following an intelligence-led operation by security forces.
The operation, which involved personnel of the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, resulted in the safe recovery of the victims.
Sources said the coordinated operation was driven by actionable intelligence gathered by the participating agencies, leading security operatives to the location where the victims were being held.
Following their rescue, the 21 victims were taken to a DSS facility where they received medical attention and were assessed for their physical condition.
Presstv News Nigeria learnt that the successful operation underscores the increasing emphasis by security agencies on intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination and targeted operations in efforts to tackle kidnapping and other forms of criminality across the country.
The rescued prospective corps members are expected to undergo further screening and debriefing as security authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding their abduction.
The latest development comes amid heightened security efforts to protect young Nigerians travelling for the NYSC mobilisation exercise and to curb the activities of criminal groups targeting commuters and prospective corps members.
Security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and bring them to justice.
