The Federal Government has commenced the payment of ₦18 billion in outstanding severance benefits to about 2,100 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited.

Presstv News Nigeria learnt that the payment follows approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to settle the long-standing financial obligations owed to the former workers.

According to the payment arrangement, beneficiaries in batches one to seven have received their entitlements, while the benefits of another 600 former workers in batches eight and nine are currently being finalised.

The exercise involved the verification and validation of beneficiaries, including biometric capture and confirmation of their personal and banking details.

The government has also announced plans for a mop-up exercise to accommodate eligible beneficiaries whose records could not be processed during the initial phase.

The exercise will also cover cases involving deceased beneficiaries, with their next of kin or estates expected to complete the necessary verification and documentation.

The payment is expected to provide relief to former Nigeria Airways workers who have waited for several years to receive their outstanding severance benefits.
