Makinde Warns Oyo Monarchs Against Open Political Support, Says Partisanship Could Expose Them to Attacks
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers across the state against openly aligning with political parties or candidates, cautioning that partisan monarchs could become targets of avoidable political attacks.
Presstv News Nigeria learnt that Gov. Makinde gave the warning while speaking at the first anniversary of the coronation of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, HRM Oba Samuel Adebayo Agbegbola Ajobo Olurin I, where the governor was honoured with the chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.
The governor, who expressed appreciation for the honour, said the title was conferred on him by the traditional council in Ibarapa as part of activities marking the monarch’s first year on the throne.
Makinde used the occasion to reassure residents of Ibarapa that his administration remains committed to completing major infrastructure and economic development projects in the area.
He specifically pledged that the 48-kilometre Ido-Eruwa Road, currently undergoing reconstruction, would be completed.
He also assured the people that the Oyo State Agribusiness Transformation Centre, Eruwa, for which a groundbreaking ceremony has already been held, would commence operations before the end of his administration.
The governor remarks come amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with traditional institutions expected to maintain their neutrality and continue serving as unifying forces within their communities.
Makinde urged traditional rulers to preserve the dignity and non-partisan character of their stools, warning that overt political alignment could undermine their traditional authority and expose them to unnecessary political attacks.
He said the traditional institution has an important role to play in maintaining peace, stability and unity across Oyo State, particularly as political activities intensify.
The governor’s assurances on the Ido-Eruwa Road and the Eruwa Agribusiness Transformation Centre are also expected to strengthen economic prospects in Ibarapaland, particularly in agriculture, transportation and rural commerce.
The event brought together traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to commemorate the first anniversary of the Eleruwa’s coronation and celebrate the traditional institution’s role in the development of Ibarapaland.
